What the job involves

At the Ashburton District Council, water is at the heart of our community’s story – shaping our landscapes, supporting our people, and sustaining our future. As our Stormwater Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in writing the next chapter of this story. Your expertise will help protect our waterways, enhance our resilience, and ensure our district thrives for generations to come. You’ll play a key role in strategically planning, developing, and managing stormwater and drainage systems across the District.

 

This is a varied and rewarding role that includes:

  • Urban stormwater – reviewing and supporting stormwater systems for new and redeveloped sites, from assessment through to project delivery.
  • Rural drainage – advising residents and Council teams. Collaborating closely with Environment Canterbury and Tangata Whenua.
  • Asset management – contributing to the sustainable planning, maintenance, and development of stormwater infrastructure

Who are we looking for?

An experienced engineer with a strong technical foundation and a collaborative mindset. You will bring a mix of practical know-how, strategic thinking, and a genuine interest in sustainable infrastructure.

  • A degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, with at least 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Strong technical skills, including hydraulic modelling and use of industry-specific software.
  • A sharp eye for detail and a knack for solving complex problems.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills – you’re confident working with internal teams, contractors and the community.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with a passion for sustainable infrastructure.
