GIS Team Leader
Job No:
ADC145
Location:
Ashburton
What the job involves
We’re looking for an experienced GIS professional to lead our GIS team and help shape how spatial information is used across Ashburton District Council.
This is much more than keeping the maps running. GIS reaches across almost everything we do, from planning and property to infrastructure, operations, community services and climate considerations. You’ll work with teams across Council to understand their challenges, uncover opportunities and turn spatial information into practical solutions that improve access to information and support better decisions.
You’ll lead and develop a dedicated GIS team, drive innovation and continue to evolve our enterprise GIS environment. With ESRI expertise essential, you’ll have the opportunity to combine technical know-how, people leadership and organisation-wide influence.
This is a full-time (40 hours per week), permanent position based in Ashburton, Mid-Canterbury.

Who are we looking for?
You’ll be a collaborative and technically capable GIS professional who enjoys combining technical expertise with people leadership, problem-solving and new ideas.
To be considered for this role, you’ll bring:
- At least five years’ relevant GIS experience, including a minimum of three years at a senior level
- Experience leading or managing people
- Strong hands-on experience with ESRI technologies, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise
- A relevant tertiary degree qualification or professional equivalent
- The ability to translate business needs into practical spatial solutions
- Curiosity and an eye for new opportunities
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
Experience with FME and programming or scripting languages such as Python, Arcade, SQL or JavaScript would be an advantage.
Make a career move and a lifestyle move
Already thinking this sounds interesting, but Ashburton isn’t home? Let us tempt you.
We can offer relocation and short-term accommodation assistance to help make the move easier.
And there are some pretty good reasons to make it. Think more affordable housing, shorter commutes, great community facilities and more time to enjoy life outside of work. With Lake Hood and Mt Hutt within easy reach and Christchurch just up the road, you don’t have to choose between career opportunity and lifestyle.
Your next career move might just give you more room to live, too.
What we can offer you
Alongside a role with genuine variety and scope, our benefits include:
- Relocation and short-term accommodation assistance
- Travel allowance for qualifying staff
- Professional development opportunities
- Flexible work options
- Discounted school holiday programmes
- Birthday leave
- The ability to purchase an additional week of leave
- Health and wellbeing benefits
- Employee and retail discounts
- Service recognition benefits
The salary for this position is $105,000 to $123,000 per annum, depending on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
A bit about us

You’ll join a supportive team where your expertise matters, your ideas are welcome and there is genuine scope to explore what’s possible next.
If you’re ready for a role with broader scope, real influence and a lifestyle with a little more room to breathe, we’d love to hear from you.
