Finance Business Partner - Water Services

Job No: ADC109
Location: Ashburton

Finance Business Partner – Water Services
Ashburton District Council | Ashburton

Ready to balance the books and make waves at the same time? Dive into a role at Ashburton District Council, based in Ashburton, where your financial smarts help keep our communities’ water services flowing smoothly — without sending budgets down the drain.

We’re looking for a Finance Business Partner – Water Services who loves partnering with people, turning numbers into stories, and spotting leaky risks before they become budget blowouts.

What you’ll be doing:

This is not your typical behind‑the‑scenes finance job. You’ll be front and centre, partnering with our Water Services team to ensure our planning, reporting and investment decisions are not just compliant — but smart, sustainable and future‑proof.

  • Own the numbers — budgets, forecasts, performance… you keep everything sharp, smart and moving in the right direction.
  • Shape the big-picture plans (Annual Plan, LTP, Water Services Delivery Plan) and help build the financial foundations of a brand‑new Water Services unit.
  • Catch issues early — if something’s drifting, leaking, or looking dodgy, you’re the one who sees it first.
  • Build reporting that actually makes sense — clear, clean, compliant and useful.
  • Make TechOne work for us, not the other way around — streamline, simplify, tidy up the data pipes.
  • Create models + insights that help engineers, managers and decision‑makers get the full story fast.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Analytical chops — you see trends, gaps and opportunities faster than most people open a spreadsheet.
  • Detail devotion — decimals, timing, assumptions… you care about the bits that truly matter.
  • A “let’s make this simple” communicator — especially for the people who only want to know: “Are we good or not?”
  • A finance or accounting qualification, with local government or infrastructure experience a strong plus.
  • CAANZ membership? Great, but we won’t hold it against you if it’s still in progress or not your path.

What's in it for you?

  • Be part of building something new — you’ll help create the financial backbone of a brand‑new Water Services unit.
  • You’ll be part of a supportive, forward-thinking finance team.
  • We value ideas, initiative, and a good sense of humour.
  • Flexible working, great benefits, and a chance to shape how we do finance.
  • Do work that matters — your insights impact essential water infrastructure people rely on daily.

Ready to apply?
Because your work will genuinely matter. You’ll help shape financial decisions that impact essential water services — the kind people rely on every single day.
